Thank You and Adieu

Last night the Library was alive with laughter, curiosity, intelligence, passion, and the love of a good story, as we gathered to listen to Cara Black share how and why she writes her mysteries set in Paris. It was wonderful.

During the ten years I have worked at Pacific Grove Public Library, there are not many moments when I have just sat and imbibed the atmosphere of the Library. When you're part of the staff, there is always something or somebody, (if not many things and many people), waiting for your attention.

For the most part, I find the constant movement, interaction, variety of questions and responsibilites energizing. But there is something peaceful and settling about entering the Library and quietly imbibing its atmosphere. It's like a good poem or a soft melody or the company of a dear friend - it holds you and opens your awareness to new possibilities.

I have worked in more than a dozen libraries during my career: public, academic, legal, even a bookmobile driving around San Francisco. But this library, the Pacific Grove Public Library, is my favorite.

It's my favorite for many reasons. I love the Carnegie arches and the high ceilings. I love the Children's Room and the Landaker mural. I love the collection, which has been carefully honed to contain old and new titles - to be discovered and rediscovered by one generation, then another. But mainly I love the spirit - of the library, the staff, the community it serves.

I love the staff who welcome you as you walk in the door. I love the exuberance that rings out from the Children's Room. I love the inquisitiveness of people who stop by the reference desk. I love the fact that visitors feel at home here. Because the reality is - this is part of every Pagrovian's home.

The Library is the community's living room - a place where you can relax, rejuvenate, engage. There's something for everybody: books, newspapers, magazines, music, movies, eBooks to read, audio books to listen to, story times for children, events for adults.

When I've entered the Library through the staff entrance, I've been inspired by the potential - for the Library to build on its natural beauty and spirit and become even more for its community. More programs for teens and adults; more workshops on writing or using technology, on cooking (during the Farmers Market), or even knitting; a speaker's circle highlighting the creativity and expertise of local residents; an oral history program; local history exhibits; game night; bookclubs, etc.

There is so much I had hoped to do: to help rebuild the Library after the devasting budget cuts of 2008; to help make it a "village library for the 21st century."

And so it is with some sadness that I bid the Library, its staff and patrons adieu. I have accepted an offer to join the staff at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and will begin working there next week. (I feel like I am going to graduate school: so many new resources and databases to learn, while I meet and assist students from all over the world!)

I have loved being here. I have enjoyed meeting you, chatting with you, working with you. Thank you for trusting me with your questions, sharing your ideas and inspiration, lending a helping hand, being wonderful patrons.

My wish for you is that your Library receives stable and secure funding - soon. And flourishes for another century or two.

Meet the Author: Cara Black

Cara Black frequents a Paris little known outside the beaten tourist track. On her research trips, she interviews French police, private detectives and café owners to come up with ideas for her popular Aimée Leduc detective series.For readers new to Black, each of her mysteries is set in a different arrondissement of Paris.

As Black's many fans have learned, every part of the city has its secrets and political intrigues. The quiet, wealthy Passy neighborhood in the 16th arrondissement is the setting for the 11th installment of the series, Murder in Passy.

It has been the Library's good fortune to have had Ashlee Wright as an employee for the past 4 years.

Ashlee Wright is one of the few individuals who has worked in three different job classifications during her tenure at the Library. In 2007, she began working as a shelver, and quickly gained recognition based on her creative ideas, diligent work habits, and infectious enthusiasm.

In 2008, as soon as the budget allowed, Ashlee was promoted to Library Assistant. In that capacity she used her wonderful organizational abilities to bring order to files left unattended due to drastic staff cuts. During this time, she also earned her Masters degree in Library Science via the University of Washington's Distance Learning program.

Following the completion of her graduate studies and the passage of Measure U, we were delighted to bring Ashlee on board as a Librarian. Unfortunately the funding for that position was discontinued after three months. However Ashlee graciously remained with us as a Library Assistant. She continued to distinguish herself with her technical skills and professional initiative. In July 2010, Ashlee was once again promoted to Librarian, and since then has been working at the Reference Desk every Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. But that's only a small part of what Ashlee does.....

Ashlee applied for and received a grant to begin a Teen Area in the Library. Next week new shelving arrives and her vision will begin to take shape.... She has also organized and inventoried more than 500 documents and images related to the history of Pacific Grove. We are thrilled to have had this opportunity to deal with the backlog of local history materials. And we could not have made as much progress without Ashlee's dedication and skills.

Many of you have personally benefited from her determination to find the books or information you're seeking. All of you have indirectly benefited from her: artistic flair in creating displays; logistic plans for shifting the collection; and practical suggestions for improving services.

It is with great joy for Ashlee, (and some sadness at our loss), that we share her good news. She has accepted a job offer at the University of San Francisco's Law Library!

Congratulations Ashlee!

Thank you for everything you've done on behalf of the Pacific Grove Public Library and its patrons. You will be missed.

Ashlee will be with us through April 1st, (no joke), for those of you who would like to stop by and wish her well.

Website - In the Spotlight

This week we learned about an interesting website: Authorial London. It's the creation of Stanford professor, Martin Evans. During his trips to London, Evans has seached throughout the city for houses, apartments, pubs and other buildings associated with literary authors.

Evans selected fifty North American and British authors who spent a significant part of their lives in London. The list ranges from from Geoffrey Chaucer to Mark Twain. One of the unexpected benefits of his project is that it shows when authors' paths crossed. For example Slyvia Plat once lived in the same house on Primrose Hill in which W. B. Yeate lived many years earlier.

The website is designed for readers of English literature who may not have an opportunity to visit London and explore it's numerous literary sites in person. However even frequent visitors to London will enjoy it.

Hitchcock's Grandmother in P.G.?

This week, a Pagrovian came in with a "stump-the-librarian" question. When she went to school in P.G., a few decades ago, she heard that Alfred Hitchcock's grandmother lived in Pacific Grove. She's wondering if it's true.

We have yet to reach a definitive answer, but this is what we have found so far.

Alfred Hitchcock's grandmothers were: Anne Hitchcock & Emma Whelan.

Neither of those names appear in the Library's Local History File.

Neither of those names appeared in a spot check of Polk City Directories for this area.

Biographies of Hitchcock indicate that he asked and encouraged his mother to move to California. However she never did. No mention was made of his grandmothers.

Biographies also indicate that Hitchcock owned some property at the end of Canham Road near Scotts Valley at one time, (in addition to his home in Los Angeles). Apparently he sold the property and made L.A. his main home.

If you have any leads or information about Hitchcock's grandmother living in P.G., please let us know.

A Bowling Alley at PG High?

Did you know the old High School, (currently the Middle School), once had a bowling alley?

It's been confirmed, by PGHS Alumni. There was a one-lane bowling alley in the gym.

Both Jayne Gasperson and Richard Stillwell remember it. You wore regular tennis shoes, had to set your own pins, and there weren't many bowling balls to choose from... but it was there.

We paged through 50 years of old High School Yearbooks, looking for a photograph, but were unable to find one. If you happen to have one in your scrapbook or photo album, please bring it by. We'd love to make a copy so we can share it with others! Or if you have any PGHS bowling stories, we'd love to hear those too.

Legos in the Library!

If you were in the Library Wednesday afternoon, you probably noticed a lot of activity in the Children's Room. Senior (& Children's) Librarian, Lisa Maddalena, hosted the Library's first Lego Show & Tell event.
It was a HUGE success. Although it was primarily promoted in Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms, boys and girls of all ages came to share their favorite lego creations....

....and look at what others created.

The response was so enthusiastic, that Lisa is considering making it an annual event, and expanding it into an event for kids of all ages. (Yes, even older "kids" with gray hair!)

Tax Forms

Did you know that the IRS and the California Franchise Tax Board have stopped mailing individual tax packages to tax payers? Yes, it's true. It is part of their effort to encourage everyone to file electronically.

However, we know that not everyone likes to file electronically. So the Library continues to offer tax forms to the public. You can pick up forms whenever the Library is open. We stock the basic forms:

Friends of the Library Annual Meeting - Part 2

Ideas. Ideas.Ideas.

During the Friends of the Library Annual Meeting, the room was bursting with participants' dreams for the Library.
During a "Conversation Cafe", facilitated by Elin Kelsey, Pagrovians let their imaginations spill out on paper.
Writing Workshops. Tech Lab. Tool Lending. Satellite Center for Olli at CSUMB. A 2nd story! Open during the Farmer's Market. Book Clubs. Teen Center. Movie Night. Miniature Golf in the Library!

Annual brochure sent to all residents every year. Live Music. A PG Speakers Bureau. New Website. More Ebooks. More databases. MORE MAGAZINES! Restore the interior of the Carnegie Library Reading Room. More Hours: open at least 5 days a week.

You took the theme of Refresh! to heart. And it's all down on paper. Only a few ideas are captured here... A full report is being compiled by the Friends, and will be available soon. Stay tuned.

Friends of the Library Annual Meeting

On Saturday, the Friends of the Library held their Annual Meeting, and it was a wonderful event!

Judy Archibald, the President of the Friends, offered a warm welcome. Dick Grimmer gave an encouraging Treasurer's Report. Six terrific new Board members were nominated and elected to join the existing splendid Board Members. And that was just in the first fifteen minutes!

Next, Judy announced the Friend's receipt of a bequest by Pagrovian, Erna Morris. A $100,000 check was presented to the Friends, with a promise that another $250,000 would be forthcoming in February.

In keeping with Erna's wishes and to help ensure the future of the Pacific Grove Public Library, the Friends' Board announced their decision to establish a PG Library Foundation for long-term fundraising!

Speaking on behalf of the City, Mayor Garcia expressed her appreciation for the Friends and the new Foundation. And she shared that the City supports the Library 100%. And this was only the half-way point of the meeting!

Next Senior Librarian, Lisa Maddalena, gave a brief presentation, Refresh! A Plan for Renewal for the Pacific Grove Public Library. With images and examples from other libraries, she highlighted some of the staff's ideas for revitalizing the Library.

Then for the next 45 minutes, attendees gathered around tables and brainstormed about their dreams and ideas for the Library. The room was bursting with ideas!

It truly was wonderful. And yet another testament to the fact that Pagrovians love their Library. (And have some really good ideas for its future. Some of which will be shared in the next blog post!)

The King's Speech

Is the movie, The King's Speech historically accurate?
That's one of the questions we received at the Reference Desk this week.

We thought others might be interested... So having read several articles and a few blog posts, we refer you to an article in The Telegraph. "How the King Found His Voice." Historian Andrew Roberts offers a decidely British slant on the film, but he does clarify what was exaggerated, which characters were not present at the speech in real life, and why Wallis Simpson was not depicted as positively as in American productions. Exhibit Features South Seas

This month our display cases feature a special part of the Library's collection: artifacts from the personal collection of Alvin Seale (1871-1958). Come in and view the beautiful head dresses made from coral, and ceremonial strings of sea shells and seeds.

Alvin Seale was a famous ichthyologist, well known as an authority on the fishes of Polynesia. He also gained recognition for his work as an aquarium designer. During his career, he worked as a curator for the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, headed an expedition to Alaska for the University of California, designed the aquarium for Manila, and assisted in the planning and administration of the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco.

Seale gifted these artifacts to the Library in 1936, in memory of his wife, Ethel Prouty.

'Tis the Season

People were in and out of the Library today, stocking up on holiday reading, picking up DVDs to watch over the long weekend, browsing through magazines in the reading room... The weather and the holidays make this a cozy time of year.

This week we've had so many Pagrovians and patrons stop by to wish us "Happy Holidays." And more than a few have dropped dollars into the donation jar, written a check, added canned goods to the Food for Fines bin.

'Tis the Season for giving. And the spirit of generosity manifests in numerous ways... Here in the Library, we have all our wonderful volunteers who help the staff get books back on the shelf; pull the holds you request; check book lists; type inventories; take books and CDs to homebound neighbors, sort through the mountain of book donations we receive... We watch one computer user assist another with setting up an email account. People browsing the New Book Shelf share favorite reads with the person standing next to them. One reader helps another carry their books out to the car.

This season, the Library has also been the recipient of some creative gift-giving. One Book Club skipped their annual gift exchange, and had all their members write checks to the Library. Another patron picked up some Fund Our Library donation slips, and filled them out in honor of friends on her gift list, (and attached a check). For the second December in a row, we received a donation of $10,000. The donor asked to remain anonymous.

All these gifts share the spirit of caring and sharing, generosity and gratitude. All these gifts capture the spirit of the Library - and You - the community that uses, depends on, and loves the Library.

We thank you for your many kindnesses. We are grateful for your generosity. And we wish you all a holiday filled with comfort and cheer.... and good books, great movies, and wonderful music.

A New "New Book" Display

Everybody loves new books. And Thanks to the Friends of the Library, we have a new Book Display to feature our recent acquisitions.

Each side of the display has 5 shelves. Fiction titles are located on one side; Non-Fiction titles are on the other side.

The New Books Display is currently well-stocked. So come by and pick out a few new titles for your holiday enjoyment.

Emily Dickinson

Last night, Emily Dickinson made a rare public appearance, at our library, and transported her audience into the land of poetry. Every seat was filled. And every person present received a gift - of reverie, "aha!", affirmation, consolation, laughter - something that deeply touched his or her soul.
In celebration of Emily's birth, (December 10, 1830), Dr. Barbara Mossberg shared her scholarship and passion for Dickinson and her poetry. She opened with lines from the well-known poem:

I'm Nobody! Who are you?

Are you - Nobody - too?

With wisdom, humor, and splendid storytelling, Dr. Mossberg embedded us into the existence of the unique and gifted poetess.
Watching Dr. Mossberg is not unlike watching a feather with wings. Her voice, face, and body exude lightness, exuberance, wonder and awe.The evening closed with everyone singing "Happy Birthday, Dear Emily," and eating gingerbread made using Dickinson's recipe.

The evening was sponsored and hosted by the Friends of the Library. As Dr. Mossberg said, "The Friends are truly our friends."

Wanted: Chautauqua Annual Assembly Programs

As most Pagrovians know, the summer Chautauqua assemblies were a vital part of PG's history.

In response to a reference question, we've discovered that the Library has only one original program from these historic events: for the year 1914.

A quick search shows that the Heritage Society has five other programs (1879, 1895, 1898, 1912, 1923). Monterey Public Library has an 1890 program. And the Hopkins Marine Station has the 1892 program.

But that leaves many unaccounted for. If by chance you happen upon a pamphlet for The Pacific Coast Assembly or Summer School of Science or Chautauqua Assembly, please consider making a gift of it to the Library.

We promise to take good care of it, housing it in an archival sleeve, and keeping it in our Local History file cabinets that have recently had locks added, to safeguard items of local interest for future Pagrovians.

Meanwhile, our reference staff will make copies of any programs we can find. And eventually we would like to make digital copies available on the Library's website.

Exhibit on Monarch Alert

Have you ever found a tiny tag on a Monarch Butterfly? If so, you've witnessed the Monarch Alert Program in action.

As every Pagrovian knows, Monarch Butterflies overwinter in California, and PG is one of their favorite destinations. The population of western monarchs fluctuate from year to year, but it can exceed 100,000!

Monarch Alert is dedicated to tracking the population fluctuations in Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties. Their volunteers place tags on the underside of monarch wings.

These tags allow researchers to individually identify butterflies that are later re-sighted. Re-sighting information provides data on movement between overwintering sites, persistence at individual sites, population estimates per site, and migration patterns in spring.

Local Election Results

Although Measure Q received a clear majority of votes in yesterday's election, it did not get the two-thirds majority required by California law to pass. The official results, as posted on the Monterey County Elections Department website, are:

YES -- 2,827 votes -- 61.15%
NO -- 1,796 votes -- 38.85%
Total--4,623votes--100.00%

What does that mean for the future of the Library? Library operations are budgeted through June 30, 2011. After that, it will depend on how the City Council allocates next fiscal year's budget.

5 incumbents were re-elected to the City Council.

Carmelita Garcia was re-elected as Mayor, with 3,503 votes (100%).

Daniel Miller and Robert Huitt were re-elected to 2 Year (Short Term) City Council seats, with 2,768 votes (50.24%) and 2,742 votes (49.76%)respectively.

And Alan Cohen, Ken Cuneo and Rudy Fischer were elected to 4 year (Full Term) Council seats, with 2,546 votes (27.56%), 2,557 votes (27.68%), and 2,209 votes (23.91%) respectively.

Councilman Bill Kampe has 2 years remaining in his term.

If you've been by the Monterey Conference Center this week, you may have noticed hundreds of people sporting chartreuse bags emblazoned with Internet Librarian 2010. This annual conference is an amazing opportunity to meet and learn from some of the brightest information professionals, who are using technologies in creative and exciting ways for the benefit of library users like you.

After three days of presentations, my mind is swimming with ideas and inspiration. There are so many programs and services our staff would love to develop and share with you: cool websites; more reading recommendations; digital collections on PG's history; more use of social media; and all sorts of programs to educate, entertain and inspire!

We confess, it's happening more s-l-o-w-l-y than we would like, (due to limited staffing and resources), but it is happening. Plans for some new equipment and services are in the works.... and now we have even more ideas! Stayed tuned...

Gorgeous Gourds

October means Indian Summer in PG. But it also conjures up images of autumn leaves, staffs of wheat, bushels of apples, pumpkins and gourds.

We're all familiar with jack-o-lanterns. But the tradition of carving gourds extends far back in time and across cultures - when gourds were used as bowls, bottles, musical instruments, masks, and even national currency.

This month, our exhibit cases feature Gorgeous Gourds from Africa, Mexico and the United States' Southwest, as well as some decorated by local artists. Melissa Pickford has put together an exquisite exhibit that delights and inspires.

The PG Library owns two titles specifically on Gourd Crafts: The Complete Book of Gourd Carving by Jim Widess, and Bonnie Gibson's Gourds: Southwest Gourd Techniques & Projects from Simple to Sophisticated.

Celebrate the Right to Read

Banned Books Week has come and gone. But our Banned Books Display will remain up for the rest of this month. We think it's important to remember what can happen when communities stop celebrating their right to read.

Of course, at the Pacific Grove Public Library, reading is continually celebrated: in our 100 year old Reading Room where adults are absorbed in the latest issues of magazines and newspapers; during story times in the Children's Room; at special events like our Meet the Author series; and wherever someone is sitting at a table or study carrel.

Banning books is not a thing of the past. Every year old and new titles - some as non-threatening as the dictionary - are challenged. Frequently banned books include those on this list from The American Library Association. But there are some surprises too, such as some of those listed in this article by Pam Gaulin of the Associated News.

Next year, during Banned Books Week, we'd like to host a Banned Book Reading - where you can read a page or two from your favorite banned book. Meanwhile, celebrate your right to read whatever you want. Stop by and pick up a book of your choice.

The Library was humming with inspiration and laughter last night as Dr Barbara Mossberg entranced the audience with her presentation, The Power of the Butterfly: How Books Have Changed the World.

Her talk wove poetry with history, physics, civil rights, "earth rights," personal anecdote, and fascinating facts about John Muir, Henry Thoreau, Abraham Lincoln, and Emily Dickinson to create a rich tapestry - of creative thought - for reflection and as a springboard to action.

Numerous attendees commented on their desire to hear more from PG's Poet in Residence. And we're delighted to report that she is already scheduled to celebrate Emily Dickinson's birthday with us on Friday, December 10th (in costume and gingerbread made from Emily's recipe).

There's a Silent Art Auction Happening at the Library!

Six pieces of original art work are on display and available to the highest bidder. Artists represented include Howard Landaker, (who painted the mural in the Library's Children's Room); his wife and fellow painter Mabel Landaker; watercolorist Roni Cumming; and Brian Norkaitis.
The Heritage Society is making these works available to the public, as part of the 41st Annual Historic Home Tour. Each piece has been evaluated by Steve Hauk, of Hauk Fine Arts. And all proceeds will benefit the Library.
So come by, take a look, read the background information, and bid on your favorite piece!
The silent auction will continue through the final day of Chautauqua Days, October 3rd.

Magazines - Old & New Titles

There was an interesting article about Consumer Reports in the San Francisco Chronicle recently. In this age of advertising and social media, where money and personal opinion can garner good reviews, Consumer Reports stands steady as one of the few nonprofit advocacy groups, which scientifically tests products large and small - from potato chips to SUVs.

For 74 years, the Consumers Union has been testing products, challenging claims, and publishing the results for the benefit of us all.

We're not sure if the Library has subscribed to the magazine all those years, but it has been in our periodical collection as long as any staff person can remember. We keep 5 years on the index table, (across from the public access computer). And this month we've added something new: Consumer Reports on Health. Get expert, unbiased, fact-based, health information from a trusted source: Consumer Reports - at your Library.

All the seats were full Thursday evening, when Brad Herzog regaled us with stories from his travels around the United States.

It was one of those golden Pacific Grove evenings: local boy back home, after a journey hither and yon, welcomed back by friends and admirers. Brad held everyone's attention, as he told us about "heroes" he met - people who were more unique and inspiring "than anything I could have ever made up."

Laughter, sighs, and nodding heads punctuated his talk, which was followed by Q&A . Afterwards, a long queue formed for Brad to sign his books.

Everyone who attended agreed, it was a wonderful evening at the PG Library.

Brad has described his latest book, Turn Left at the Trojan Horse, ".... as the memoir of an Everyman searching for the hero within himself." It is part travelogue, part biography - interspersed with philosophical musings.

He promises "a good show -- telling stories, reading, Q&A about my book and the writing life." And he is generously donating all profits on the sale of his books to the PG Library!

City Slogans, 1930-Present

Recently we received a question about Pacific Grove's city slogan. Some know P.G. as "The Last Home Town." Others refer to our town as "Butterfly Town U.S.A."

While searching through the Polk City Directories, we discovered that the city slogan throughout the 1930s was listed as the "City of Smiles." In the 1940s and 1950s it was known as the "City of Homes." And in the 1960s it became known as "Butterfly Town U.S.A." In 1978 the Friends of the Grove (FOG) coined the phrase"The Last Home Town" for bumper stickers used to protest the building of the Pacific Grove Plaza complex on Lighthouse Avenue. The phrase resonated with Pagrovians and continues to be widely used.

Local Authors for Libraries!

Today's Book Fair at the Barnyard was a huge success! 60 authors were scattered around the gardens: their presentations and book displays as colorful as the surrounding flowers.
Pagrovians were in full force. Everywhere you turned someone was wearing an "I Love PG Library" button. One Friend was wearing 4!

Several Pacific Grove Library Supporters were lending a hand selling raffle tickets.Other Pagrovians were on hand to sell their wares.

Diane Grindol's table featured her delightful Haiku poem collections: Dogku, Haiku, Catku.

Patrick Flanigan was busy at his table selling When Sunflowers Speak.

Walter Gourlay represented authors in Monterey Shorts and Monterey Shorts II.There were thought-provoking and humourous presentions. Belle Yang spoke on her creative process and journey.

Elliott Ruchowitz-Roberts shared a "library" poem by Billy Collins: Marginalia.
And Patrice Vecchion put out a call for a collaborative poem by the Monterey Peninsula: Why I Love Libraries. To send her your contribution visit her website.

After checking our sources in the Library, talking to several Pagrovians, posting the question on this blog and the Library's Facebook page, we have been unable to locate the whereabouts of a quote something thought was inscribed on a building in P.G.

We had a promising lead to a location by Lake El Estero in Monterey... but to no avail. Our source double-checked and discovered it was no longer there. So this remains an unanswered question. It's Official - Library Parcel Tax Measure on November Ballot

During the past two months a Library Resolution and Ordinance has been discussed at City Council meetings for putting a Library Parcel Tax on the November ballot. The purpose of the measure is to raise desperately needed funds to restore Library hours and services. On Wednesday, June 23rd, a final version of the measure was approved.

A similar measure appeared on the ballot last November, and was narrowly defeated (by approximately 30 votes).

What makes this measure different?

A Steering Committee of concerned citizens drafted this measure based on a thorough analysis of city and library finances. (Last year, the measure was drafted by City Staff.)
The amounts of the parcel tax have been reduced: from $96 to $90 for each parcel; and from $75 to $45 per unit for multiple units.
There will be no cost of living increases. The tax will remain at the $96 and $45 levels for 10 years.
An independent citizen's oversight committee is designated to annually audit how the tax monies are used.
The measure specifies the City augment the parcel tax with General Fund monies. 2.83% of the Total General Fund budget is to be allocated annually to the Library. (In FY 2010/11 dollars, that would amount to $420,000.)

The Steering Committee worked diligently, with City Administration and the City Council, to create a measure that responded to residents' suggestions and the fiscal realities of what it costs to restore Library hours and services. We applaud their hard work.

Library Fees Increase

It pays to return your books, CDs and DVDs on time. And the savings will be even greater beginning July 1st.

As approved by City Council, the following Library fees will increase:

The overdue fee for adult materials will increase from .25/day to .50/day.
The interlibrary loan fee will be $3/per request.

Please Note:

These are the first fee increases in more than 10 years.
The overdue fees at Pacific Grove Public Library are now the same as at Monterey Public Library.
The overdue fee for children materials will remain the same: .25/day.

There is something for everybody at the Library this week.

Make A Splash Summer Reading Club Events continue on Wednesday at 2 pm, when Randall McGee and his dragon, Groark, take center stage in the Children's Room. (All Summer Reading Club events are open and free for all.)

Immediately afterwards, in the arcade, is a ribbon cutting celebration for Kykat Publishing. You may have read about Jeanne Osio and her daughter Lisa Osio Lavin in The Herald. They've published their first book together, Flying Pieces of Macaroni & Cheese. Stop by between 3-6 pm to meet them and buy their book. 25% of proceeds will be donated to the Library.

And last but not least, on Sunday the 13th, we are delighted to present Jane Smiley. Writer Extraordinaire: Pulitzer Prize winner, childrens book author, biographer (Charles Dickens), and essayist. Join us in Chautauqua Hall at 2 pm. ($10 fee.) A special reception begin at 3:30 in the Library, for an additional fee of $25.

Maps to Borrow!

It's June. School's out. Summer's here. And for many of you that means Summer Vacations!

As you plan your vacations, keep in mind the Library has a Map File. It includes road maps from all the states, some of the major cities, and a few from other countries.

You'll also find special maps such as historical maps, maps on world climate, and the special maps issued by National Geographic magazine.

In these days of GPS and Google maps, a folding map may seem archaic. However, they have their advantages and allure. You're not limited to a small screen size so you get a larger perspective, re-folding a map can be as challenging as sudoku (if you like puzzles), and it's said that reading a map enhances the brain's navigational senses.

So whether you're going on a trip, or have a case of cartophilia, come check out our Map File. Maps can be checked out for 2 weeks, and they can be renewed.

Better Budget News!

At this evening's City Council Meeting, the Council voted unanimously to increase the Library's budget for FY 2010/11! Yes, that's right, an increase in General Fund monies was allotted to our budget!

Councilperson Lisa Bennett gave an impassioned plea for greater support for the Library, and made the motion to raise the General Fund allocation from $550,000 to $600,000. After thoughtful discussion among the six Council members, the motion was passed unanimously.

Will this allow the Library to be open more hours? Not yet. However it will allow more part-time staffing - which will help us catch up on the backlog of routine tasks and special projects that have been on hold during the severe budget cuts of the past three years.

Also, as Councilperson Bennett emphasized, increased support by the Council sends a strong message to Pagrovians that together we can rebuild the Library to be strong and vibrant once again. She painted an inspiring scenario that with General Fund support and a successful Library ballot measure, the Library's budget could be restored to its previous funding level of $1.1 - $1.2 million.

The recommended changes are contingent on a second reading and final approval of the Budget on June 16th. Meanwhile, you may want to drop your City Council members a Thank You.

Budget News....

It's that time of year at City Hall - "Budget Season." On Wednesday, March 25th, the City Council will review the Recommended Budget for FY 2010/11 in a Special Meeting designated specifically for that purpose.

The 138 page document is available for review at the Library, and online.

How does the Library fare? Better... and worse... than hoped for last year at this time.

Because Measure J narrowly lost the election, (approximately 30 votes shy of the needed 67%), the Library will not receive an influx of new funds.

However, due to solid citizen support, new leadership at City Hall and a concerned City Council, it is recommended that the Library continue to receive funding from the General Fund. In fact there is a slight increase in General Fund monies, (that essentially replaces a generous gift towards operating funds received from the Friends of the Library last fiscal year).

If the Recommended Budget is passed, the Library will remain open the same number of hours and days: Tuesdays and Thursdays 11 am - 6 pm. Fridays and Saturdays noon - 5 pm.

The meeting commences Wednesday at 6 pm. All interested persons are encouraged to attend.

Rollin Pickford Exhibit Continues Through May 31st

The Library has been honored this month to display sketches and ephemera from the collection of Rollin Pickford.

Pickford has been painting watercolors for over 60 years, and his mastery is evident in every stroke.

He has painted thousands of watercolors; the majority in Fresno, where he has lived most of his life. Their evocative chronicle of a vanishing rural landscape has earned him the title of “painter laureate of the San Joaquin Valley.”

The Monterey Bay Peninsula also figures prominently in his work. Beginning in the late 1960s, he painted here every summer.

Several Pagrovians recall seeing him around town. He spent hours walking about, absorbing a scene before painting it. As he explained:

"It takes a long time to study a landscape and absorb all the facets of it. You don't get that immediately, and walking around is the best way to let it come into your consciousness."

"The Chinese are famous for walking through a landscape sometimes for two days or three, not making any image. Then they go back to their studio to make the paintings of what they have absorbed."

Why So Many Names of Women On The Plaques?

Every month, we answer hundreds of questions at the Reference Desk. Some are simple. Some are difficult. Some are "repeats"(asked more than once). And we have yet to find a definitive answer for a few.

For your enjoyment and erudition, we'll be sharing some Q&A in the Blog.

This question came from a visitor who was "charmed by all the wonderful small houses and especially..the plaques with the original owners' names on them....Is there a specific reason why so many women were owners of these houses in late 1800s and early 1900s? Do you think it had to do with Asilomar being a YWCA facility"

This is an example where we found no definitive answer. But the question was discussed in the February/March 2002 issue of The Heritage Society's Board and Batten. In the article Magic Plaques? by Adam Weiland, it's written:

"We do not know for sure why so many homes recorded only a woman as the owner. Many long time residents are surprised when they find out their family home was "officially and legally" owned by their great-grandmother with no mention of their great-grandfather. Other descendants are surprised when they find out their "family home" was really owned by a great-aunt or, in a few cases, someone not even related to their family. .....Although this is just speculation, here are some my thoughts on why there are so many plaques with a woman's name:

1) Women lived longer, so perhaps it avoided some tax issues when the man died. 2) Many of the men owned their own business, so perhaps it was to protect their home from creditors should the business fail. 3) In some cases the woman was a widow or unmarried when she had the house built. 4) Perhaps it was a generally accepted practice at the time. 5) Religion had nothing to do with it. Although Pacific Grove was founded as a Methodist retreat,nothing precluded men from owning real estate in the Retreat."

102 and Loving It!

The weather was gray outdoors. But inside the Library was bright and cheerful as we celebrated our 102nd birthday on Saturday.

Nancy Raven & Anne Downs regaled us in song.

Mr. Horsefeathers had all the kids laughing.

Francis, Gary and Anita sold lots of used books, to help the Library purchase new books.

And everyone enjoyed popcorn & cake!

These two Friends summed it up well: "I love PG Library."

A special thanks to CTB-McGraw Hill for selecting the Library as a recipient of their generous Community Volunteers program. It was a delight working with their staff, who assisted from beginning to end in a myriad of ways.

Did you notice the article by Mike Hale in The Herald on Wednesday? It noted that "Americans consume 350 slices of pizza every second, an amount equal to 100 acres a day. Just as you read that sentence, another 20,000 slices of pie disappeared down our collective gullets."

We're hoping Pagrovians and other Library fans are in a pizza-eating mood on Sunday, the 16th, when our local Round Table Pizza is offering 15% of all food sales to the Library.

Our web host provider experienced problems with one of their servers beginning Friday afternoon. They are in the process of replacing the server and reloading files. They are devoting all their attention to the situation, however services may not be restored until Monday. The Library @ Good Old Days

It's the largest event in Pacific Grove, with something for everybody! Bands and dancing, a pancake breakfast and parade, hundreds of arts and crafts booths, historic walking tours, a dog show, classic cars, and on and on and on it goes...

This year you'll be seeing the Library around Good Old Days.

There's a Used Book Sale in the Library Arcade at 9 am. Wander over before, or after, the Kiwani's pancake breakfast.
Come dressed as your favorite storytime character, and join Lisa in the PARADE on Saturday! (Children and their parents are welcome to march. Please meet at Pine and Alder no later than 9:30 a.m.)
The Friends of the Library will have a table on Lighthouse Avenue. Stop by to buy I Love PG Library buttons, magnets and book tote bags.
The PG Fire Department is hosting a BBQ booth to benefit the Library. Stop by for lunch, on Saturday and Sunday, 11 am - 2 pm. And please give them a big Thank You for helping the Library.

Enjoy Pacific Grove at its funnest and friendliest. And if you want a breal from all the hustle and bustle, stop by the Library. We'll be open noon - 5 pm.

Library Closed Cesar Chavez Day

Just a reminder:

City offices, including the Library, will be closed on Wednesday, March 31st in observance of Cesar Chavez Day.

Cesar Chavez was born on March 31, 1927. From the age of 10, he lived in tents and migrant labor camps with his parents and siblings as they followed the harvest from crop to crop in fields, orchards and vineyards across Arizona and California. In 1952 he joined the Community Service Organization to help poor communities throughout the U.S. organize themselves into effective negotiating blocs, and helped lead a successful voter registration drive of Mexican-Americans. He is best remembered for: founding the association that became the United Farm Workers; and a prolonged strike against vineyard owners in California, including a successful two-year grape boycott.

Chavez distinguished himself by his nonviolent tactics and his ability to draw support and build alliances with many different groups, e.g., civil rights groups, Roman Catholic clergy, liberal intelligentsia and celebrities.

Library Summit Report

On February 6, 2010, more than 100 people attended the Library Summit. It was a beehive of activity, with numerous meetings happening concurrently.

Thanks to the participants who hosted meetings and our wonderful volunteer Lois Bennett, notes from the various sessions have been compiled in the Report from the Pacific Grove Library Summit. If you prefer to read a paper copy, the Library has one in the Reference Area.

The Report is a testament to the enthusiam and creativity of the Pacific Grove community. We look forward to sharing more about it, as ideas take shape.

Lisa Maddalena - Employee of the Year!

Lisa Maddalena

was celebrated as Employee of the Year last night,

at a festive reception hosted by Passionfish Restaurant.

Moe Ammar and the Chamber of Commerce hosted the event, which was attended by the Mayor, members of the City Council, City Staff, and numerous Library patrons - including many who identified themselves as a "Story time Mom" or "Story time Dad. "

For 27 years, Lisa has championed reading, story times, creativity and fun for young people. Two generations of Pacific Grove children have benefited from, and been delighted by, her programs and outreach to schools.

More recently she has added Senior Librarian to her title. Amidst incredibly challenging times, she has accepted responsibility for keeping the Library open.

Through easy and difficult times, Lisa remains helpful, kind, resourceful and always ready to greet you a smile. Please stop by to say hello and congratulate Lisa. She's Employee of the Year all year long!

Steinbeck Exhibit

In celebration of John Steinbeck's birthday on February 27th, Esther Trosow has put together a fascinating exhibit on the Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author.

Many of the Pagrovian settings used by Steinbeck in his work, as well as locations where he and his friend Ed Ricketts lived, worked, and played are featured.

In addition to the exhibit, books by or about Steinbeck are displayed, and can be checked out by patrons with Pacific Grove or Monterey Library cards.
